ACARE presented its Position Paper on “Safeguarding Europe’s competitive edge in global aviation. A sectoral approach to aviation technology roadmaps and product vision (2028–2034)” on 02 June 2026 to Mr. Manuel Aleixo, Cabinet Expert of Commissioner Zaharieva.
Through this Paper, ACARE provides a consolidated, science-based perspective and neutral view of the priorities within the entire European aviation ecosystem.
As the voice of European aviation stakeholders, ACARE brings together industry, research organisations, academia, airports, airlines, European organisations and public authorities to deliver a coherent view on the priorities shaping the European aviation sector’s transition.
The paper outlines key directions to:
This contribution aims to support ongoing discussions at the European level, including future research and innovation programmes, and to facilitate informed decision-making.
Rather than a standalone report, this paper represents a starting point for continued dialogue and collaboration between the European Commission and the aviation community.
Catalin Nae: “Safeguarding Europe’s competitive edge in global aviation. A sectoral approach to aviation technology roadmaps and product vision (2028–2034)” advocates for aviation R&I not merely as a sectoral priority, but as a systemic enabler of Europe’s long-term sovereignty and sustainable prosperity. A steady public investment across the full technology readiness spectrum is requested. The ACARE Paper highlights the importance of bridging the persistent gap between scientific excellence and industrial deployment, while reinforcing Europe’s capacity to design, certify, manufacture, and scale next-generation aviation technologies within an increasingly competitive and fragmented global environment."
Eric Dalbies: "Europe stands at a pivotal moment for aviation, where the need for competitiveness goes hand in hand with technological sovereignty and sustainability. This new paper “Safeguarding Europe’s competitive edge in global aviation. A sectoral approach to aviation technology roadmaps and product vision (2028–2034)” is a key contribution of ACARE to define a comprehensive approach on product vision and technology roadmap and guide the sector through 2028-2034, ensuring Europe's continued global leadership in aviation. By uniting European stakeholders and investing in research, innovation and industrialisation, Europe can take decisive steps towards climate-neutral, competitive, and resilient air mobility "
Bart de Vries: “For operators, the ACARE paper signals a new era where fundamental research and innovation translate into more efficient, resilient, and climate-friendly airport and airline operations. By aligning advanced technologies with real operational needs, this vision empowers European stakeholders to deliver seamless mobility and outstanding passenger experience. Investing in science-driven solutions today ensures that Europe’s air transport ecosystem remains robust, adaptable, and globally competitive tomorrow.”
